About Rubella (German Measles) IgM
Rubella (German Measles) IgM test helps to detect IgM antibodies in the blood.
This test looks for IgM antibodies that the body's immune system has produced against the rubella virus. When a person contracts rubella for the first time, they produce IgM antibodies against the virus. IgM antibodies typically start to develop four days after the emergence of symptoms. IgM antibody levels continue to be detectable for up to six to eight weeks after rubella infection.
Rubella infection is contagious and easily spreads to other people, but it is preventable with an MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Thus, getting your Rubella (German Measles) IgM test done is recommended to detect a current or recent rubella infection.

Interpretation of the Test Results
Test Results
Rubella virus IgM antibodies are detected using an enzyme immunoassay
| Result in index (IgM) | Remarks |
|---|---|
| <1.2 | Non Reactive |
| 1.2-1.6 | Equivocal |
| >1.6 | Reactive |
Interpretation of the results:
- A non-reactive test result means that very few or no IgM antibodies were found in the sample, an indication that no recent rubella virus infection has occurred.
- An equivocal test result would require retesting to determine the presence or absence of IgM antibodies against rubella.
- A positive (reactive) test result means that IgM antibodies were found in the sample, which indicates a recent rubella virus infection.
FAQs on Rubella (German Measles) IgM
A blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm using a fine needle. This procedure typically takes no longer than five minutes.

Rubella (German Measles) IgM test result is usually available within 36 hours after the sample collection. However, it could take longer at times.
If you have a rubella infection, you can be contagious with rubella for about a week before and a week after the rash appears.
There is no particular medication for treating rubella. Usually, it gets better on its own. Symptoms may be managed by using over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol. Consult your healthcare provider about how to treat your symptoms effectively.
