Leukemia Panel, AML, By FISH Test
Leukemia Panel, AML, By FISH Test
The Leukemia Panel, AML, Interphase Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) Panel is designed to diagnose the most common and prognostically significant chromosomal abnormalities associated with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). The AML FISH Panel is essential for identifying rearrangements in specific genes that are used in AML diagnosis, AML prognosis, and treatment decisions for both children and adults newly diagnosed with AML. This test is particularly useful for detecting genetic mutations and chromosomal abnormalities associated with AML, guiding treatment options, and monitoring disease progression.
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a type of blood and bone marrow cancer where more immature white blood cells, called lymphocytes, are produced. It is one of the most common forms of leukemia in adults. Around 70% of childhood leukemia cases (ages 0 to 19 years) are AML, making it a critical disease for early detection. With proper AML treatment, the chance of remission and cure is higher, especially when genetic alterations are identified through AML genetic testing and AML cytogenetics.
Our FISH panel includes the following:
- RUNX1T1/RUNX1 (aka ETO/AML1) dual-fusion probe, to detect t(8;21) and variants
- PML/RARA dual-fusion probe to detect t(15;17) and variants
- CBFB/MYH11 dual fusion probe, to detect inv(16) or t(16;16)
- MLL break-apart probe to detect MLL (11q23.1-23.3) disruption
What is the Leukemia, AML, FISH Panel Used For?
Your doctor may request a Leukemia AML Panel by FISH
To detect subtle genetic mutations and rearrangements in patients with suspected AML
To predict the disease aggressiveness
To guide treatment decision
To gauge patient’s response to therapy
Symptoms of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
Symptoms of acute myeloid leukemia develop rapidly and often include
Anemia
Fatigue and weakness
Shortness of breath
Fever
Discomfort in joints and bones
Easy bleeding and bruising with red spots or purplish discoloration
Feeling of dizziness and headaches
Frequent infections
Heavy menstrual bleeding in women
Swelling in the belly
Unexplained weight loss
Preparation for Test
The Leukemia AML panel by FISH requires either a blood or bone marrow sample. So, before the collection, ask your doctor whether you should avoid eating or drinking ahead of time or stop taking any medicines or supplements. Make sure your doctor knows the history of your medical conditions and allergies.
Interpretation of Test Results
The results of the AML FISH panel are interpreted as follows:
- Positive result (Abnormal)
This report indicates translocation of t(8;21), t(15;17), or rearrangements of PML/ RARA and MLL genes, indicating an AML diagnosis. Additional bone marrow and AML cytogenetics studies may be needed to correlate with clinical findings and determine the prognosis of the condition. - Negative result (Normal)
This report indicates the absence of the above-described rearrangement/translocation in the provided sample but does not rule out the presence of a neoplastic disorder.
FAQs
How is the Leukemia AML panel by FISH testing performed?
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) panel is a Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) technique that uses short DNA sequences known as probes, linked to a fluorescent dye to locate a specific target DNA sequence or sometimes the entire chromosome within a cell. In this technique, the probe is applied to the interphase cells, which anneals itself to the complementary DNA sequence present in the sample. On exposure to fluorescent light, the probes glow up and show where they are on cancer cells, revealing any chromosomal abnormalities when viewed under a microscope.
What are the limitations of Leukemia Panel Test (AML) by FISH?
Like any laboratory technique, the FISH test has certain limitations. For example, the AML panel can only detect those chromosomal aberrations for which FISH probes are used and will not detect molecular alterations outside the targeted regions.
How reliable are the results of the AML panel by FISH testing?
The results of this test are accurate and highly reliable when conducted in an NABL-accredited laboratory, with interpretations made by qualified doctors or technicians.
How long does an AML panel by FISH test take?
The expected turnaround time to receive the AML FISH results is two to 10 days. However, the duration may be extended if laboratory examination of the provided sample reveals chromosomal abnormalities.
