Herpes simplex virus causes herpes infection. It is of two types – oral herpes (which causes cold sores around the mouth or face), and genital herpes (which affects the genitals, anal areas, and buttocks region). It is spread through direct contact from an infected individual to others. When infected, the body’s immune system will produce antibodies (proteins that help fight against infection) specific to herpes infection.
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) IgG antibody test is used to determine IgG antibodies that help diagnose herpes infection in an individual. The HSV-1 IgG Antibody test is used to screen for both active and recurrent Herpes simplex virus infection in individuals. These IgG antibodies are usually found in the blood after three to four weeks of initial infection by the virus
What is HSV-1 IgG antibody test used for?
The HSV-1 IgG antibody test is recommended in individuals when:
· Repeated symptoms are shown with a negative test result but active herpes infection
· Risk exposure to herpes virus with no symptoms
· Expecting a child or attempting to conceive
· HIV positive or at high risk of contracting it
Symptoms of Herpes infection
Mostly the herpes infection is asymptomatic, i.e., with no symptoms. However, if symptoms appear they include
Open sores (ulcers) – characteristic feature of herpes infection

Swollen lymph nodes
Who should get tested?
The HSV-1 test should be taken by individuals who are:
Sexually active
Have more than one sexual partner
Have sex with partners affected with herpes or other STDs
Trying to conceive or pregnant
Test preparation

Interpretation of the Test Results
Normal ranges: 0.90 – 1.09 IV (intravenous immunoglobulins)
The test results for herpes simplex virus – 1 IgG antibody test are given as either positive or negative.
Positive test results – It indicates there were IgM antibodies detected in the individual’s blood and may mean one of the following two things:
1. Active or current infection
2. Past infection
Negative test results – It indicates there were no IgG antibodies found in the individual’s blood sample and it is likely that the individual is not infected with the herpes simplex virus
