HPV Genotype 16/18
HPV Genotype 16/18
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that affect the moist membranes of women's skin, including the cervix (womb entrance), anus, throat, and mouth. It is mainly disseminated by skin-to-skin contact with infected people. Men can contract the virus and pass it on to their sexual partners (women). In women, it can result in genital warts, abnormal cervical cells, or cervical cancer.
The HPV genotype 16/18 test detects two strains of HPV, 16 and 18. HPV genotypes 16/18 are the two most common of the various HPV genotypes linked to HPV-related cervical adenocarcinomas (cervical cancers). This test is recommended for women over the age of 30 years who have negative cytology and positive high-risk HPV DNA test findings to decide on the need for a colonoscopy
Symptoms of HPV infection
Most people don’t even realize or have any symptoms due to HPV infection. However, the virus can sometimes develop genital warts and lumps around the vagina, anus, or penis

Interpretation of the Test Results
The HPV genotype 16/18 is usually given as either positive or negative.
Positive test results – These results show the presence of HPV genotypes 16 and 18 in the samples, indicating an increased risk of getting cervical malignancies sooner. Individuals who get positive test results will require colposcopy.
Negative test results – These indicate the absence of HPV genotypes 16 and 18. Individuals with negative test results are referred for repeat testing by both cytology and a HR-HPV test within 12 months
