Factor XIII Functional

Factor XIII Functional

The factor XIII functional test is used to evaluate the activity of factor XIII in a blood sample. It is also known as fibrin stabilizing factor and plays an important role in the coagulation cascade by enhancing the stability of blood clot formation.  Factor XIII is activated by thrombin to form factor XIIIa. Factor XIIIa is an enzyme within the blood coagulation system that is responsible for crosslinking fibrin. Deficiency of factor XIII results in compromised clot stability and an elevated tendency to experience bleeding.

Thus, it is recommended to undergo this test when there is a suspicion of factor XIII deficiency.

Preparation for the test

There is no need for any specific preparations prior to undergoing the factor XIII functional test. Your healthcare provider may recommend temporarily discontinuing certain medications before the test.

Interpretation of results

The units of measurement for the results are often given as a percentage.

The normal range for factor XIII is 57 - 192 % activity.

Normal value ranges can differ slightly between laboratories as a result of variations in measurements.

·         Low levels of factor XIII, specifically < 15%, can result in a bleeding disorder, while levels < 2% have been linked to spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage.

FAQs

How is the sample collected for the factor XIII functional test?

A healthcare provider will draw a small blood sample from a vein in your arm using a needle. The blood will be collected in a test tube or vial and sent to the lab for analysis.

What are the risks involved in the factor XIII functional test?

This test involves negligible risk. During a blood test, one may experience minor pain or bruising where the needle was inserted, but most symptoms will subside quickly.

How long should I wait for the factor XIII functional test results?

The factor XIII functional test result is usually available within 2 days after the sample collection. However, this duration may vary depending on the diagnostic clinic.

Can pregnancy be affected by factor XIII deficiency?

Pregnant women who have factor XIII deficiency are more susceptible to miscarriages and pregnancy-related bleeding complications. It is important for pregnant women with this condition to be carefully supervised by a healthcare professional.

How is factor XIII deficiency treated?

Factor XIII deficiency treatment typically involves administering Factor XIII concentrates to replenish the lacking protein. Additionally, management strategies include avoiding activities that may lead to injury and bleeding.
