C1q Complement
C1q Complement
This test is done to measure the amount of C1q, the initiating molecule for the activation of the classical complement pathway, in the blood. Any deficiency or defects in this molecule leads to a reduced or absent CH50 value. This deficiency rarely runs in families but reduced levels may be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), glomerulonephritis, and recurrent bacterial infections.
The Complement System helps the immune system to produce antibodies and make them more effective. The system eliminates dead cells and other wastes from the body, and recognizes and neutralizes bacteria and viruses.
Your healthcare provider may require you to undergo this test if CH50 is absent or there are chances of increased susceptibility to infection.
C1q Complement test is also known as :

What is a C1q Complement Test Used for?
C1q Complement test is recommended in the following conditions:
Diagnose autoimmune disorders e.g. lupus
Monitor immune complex-related conditions e.g. glomerulonephritis (GN)
Recurrent bacterial infections
Determine treatment plan for an autoimmune disease
Test preparation
A fasting sample is preferred for this test though not necessarily required.
Interpretation of the Test Results
Normal range of C1q complement varies between 12 and 22 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl).
Deviations from normal levels indicates the following:
A. Low levels of C1q complement are suggestive of:
· Inherited or acquired deficiencies
· Complement consumption arising due to infectious or autoimmune processes
B. High levels of C1q complement are suggestive of:
· Certain cancer forms, such as leukemia or non-Hodgkin lymphoma
· Ulcerative colitis
FAQs
What is the turnaround time (TAT) for C1q complement test?
Test results are made available within 2-4 working days after the sample has been received at the reference laboratory. However, this duration may vary from one diagnostic laboratory to another
How is the C1q complement test performed?
This test requires a small quantity of blood to be drawn by inserting a fine needle in the arm. The entire procedure is over within 5 minutes
Are there any risks involved in C1q complement test?
This test involves negligible risk. There may be slight bruising or soreness at the site of needle insertion which usually resolves on its own within a few minutes to a couple of hours. Very rarely, there might be an infection
Which cells produce C1q?
C1q is produced by the specialized cells called macrophages and immature dendritic cells
What is C1q complement, quantitative test useful for?
In particular, C1q complement, quantitative test is useful for evaluating kidney activity and monitoring the kidney-related disease over time
