About Brucella Antibodies, Total
The Brucella antibodies, total is a diagnostic assay test that detects antibodies produced in response to Brucella bacterial infection. Brucellosis, caused by Brucella species, primarily affects animals but can be transmitted to humans through contaminated food or direct contact. This test assesses the total level of antibodies, including immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG), aiding in the diagnosis of brucellosis infection.
Thus, getting this test done is recommended to diagnose brucellosis.
This test is also known as Brucella agglutination titer, Brucella microagglutination test, Brucella-specific agglutination, Brucella antibody titer, BMAT, standard tube agglutination test.

Interpretation of the Test Results
Titers below 1:80 are considered normal in healthy individuals. The test results may be given as positive or negative.
1. Positive result
Titers above 1:80 are considered positive. A positive result suggests exposure to Brucella or related bacteria but does not confirm an active infection. Further testing after a few weeks is recommended.
2. Negative result
A negative result typically indicates no prior exposure to the brucellosis-causing bacteria. However, early-stage infections may not be detectable, prompting a follow-up test in 10 days to 3 weeks.
