About Bence Jones Protein, Spot Urine

The Bence Jones protein test is used to detect and quantify the presence of free monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains in urine. The test is usually performed on a spot urine sample, which is a single sample collected at a specific time. Bence Jones proteins are monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains found in the urine of individuals with certain types of plasma cell disorders, such as multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer) or other related conditions. Immunoglobulins are proteins produced by plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cell.

This test helps in the diagnosis and monitoring of plasma cell disorders, especially multiple myeloma.
