Anti-Musk Antibody Test
About Anti-Musk Antibody test
Anti-Musk antibody test detects the presence of anti-muscle-specific kinase (anti-MuSK) antibodies. Anti-musk antibodies are autoantibodies, which are proteins produced by the immune system that target muscle-specific kinases. This test identifies the presence of these autoantibodies in the bloodstream of individuals with myasthenia gravis (MG), an uncommon yet often severe autoimmune condition characterized by muscle fatigue and weakness.
Muscle-specific kinases are proteins located at the junctions where nerve endings and muscle fibres meet, known as neuromuscular junctions. Thus, getting this test done is recommended to diagnose myasthenia gravis.
This test also known as
MuSK Autoantibody, MuSK Antibody, IgG
Symptoms of myasthenia gravis
Muscle weakness
Drooping eyelid
Double vision
Weak neck muscles
Difficulty walking
Difficulty chewing or swallowing
Difficulty breathing
Why is the Anti-Musk Antibody test done?
The anti-Musk antibody test is used to
Diagnose myasthenia gravis (MG)
Distinguish between MG from other conditions that may cause similar symptoms
Test preparation
No special preparation is required for the anti-Musk antibody test.
Interpretation of test results
The anti-Musk antibody test results are available as either positive or negative.
Positive test results
A positive test for anti-MuSK antibodies along with symptoms, indicative of myasthenia gravis suggests a likelihood of autoimmune muscle-specific kinase myasthenia gravis.
Negative test results
If the anti-MuSK antibody test result is negative, it decreases the likelihood of having myasthenia gravis (MG). However, it is important to note that a negative result does not completely rule out the possibility of MG. Hence, it is advised to consult your healthcare provider to know your results.
FAQs
How is the anti-Musk antibody test performed?
A blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm using a small needle. Usually, this procedure does not take more than 5 minutes.
Are there are any risks involved with the anti-Musk antibody test?
There are no known risks associated with this test. When the needle pricks your arm or hand, you might experience a mild sting or pain. The area could be painful thereafter. Sometimes, bruising, bleeding, infections, and dizziness may occur at the site of needle insertion.
How long should I wait for the anti-Musk antibody test results?
The anti-Musk antibody test results are usually available within 3- 10 working days after the sample collection. This duration may vary depending upon the diagnostic clinic.
Can myasthenia gravis be inherited?
Autoimmune disorders, including myasthenia gravis (MG), aren’t caused by specific gene changes, so they're not inherited. While they can run in families, some may inherit genetic changes leading to congenital myasthenic syndrome, a related but distinct inherited condition with similar symptoms to MG.
Are anti-Musk antibodies always present in myasthenia gravis?
No, not all individuals with myasthenia gravis have detectable anti-MuSK antibodies. Other types of antibodies, such as anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies, may be present in some cases.
