Acid Phosphatase, Total
Acid Phosphatase, Total
Acid Phosphatase, Total is used to measure the total acid phosphatase enzyme levels in the blood. This enzyme is produced by prostate cells, and its levels increase in cases of progressive and metastasizing prostate carcinoma (a type of cancer that occurs in the prostate glands). Additionally, elevated acid phosphatase levels are detected in individuals with Gaucher's disease, Niemann pick disease (a rare genetic disorder), within 1-2 days after prostate surgery, and in cases of prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate glands).
Therefore, getting this test done is recommended to determine if prostate cancer has metastasized to other areas of the body

This test is indicated in men who are/have,
Symptoms of prostate issues
Older than 40 years
Family history of prostate cancer
Test preparation
Prior to the test, it is recommended that you avoid a rectal exam or prostate massage for a duration of two to three days. Please tell your doctor if you are taking any medications before undergoing the test as certain medications may interfere with the accuracy of the test results
Interpretation of the Test Results
The normal level of acid phosphatase in the serum sample is 0.0 - 4.3 units per liter (U/L).
Acid phosphatase levels are highest in cases of metastasized prostate cancer. Diseases affecting the bones, such as Paget's disease or hyperparathyroidism, blood cell disorders like sickle cell disease or multiple myeloma, and lysosomal disorders such as Gaucher's disease, will demonstrate moderately increased levels of this enzyme
