HSV-2 IgM Antibody
HSV-2 IgM Antibody
HSV-2 IgM Antibody test helps to detect Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2) IgM antibodies in the blood. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused due to HSV-2. To combat the virus, the immune system produces antibodies. IgM antibodies are the first antibodies made in response to a herpes infection. These antibodies typically become detectable 9–10 days after exposure to infection and last for 7–14 days. HSV-2 IgM Antibody test is used to determine whether a person is having an active infection or not.
Antiviral drugs like acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir can reduce the frequency and severity of the symptoms, but there is no cure for herpes. Thus, getting your HSV-2 IgM Antibody test done is recommended for detecting a current HSV-2 infection

Interpretation of the results:
· A non reactive (normal) test result means that HSV-2 IgM antibodies were not detected in the blood sample.
· An equivocal test result would require retesting to rule out the presence of genital herpes infection.
A reactive (positive) test result means that HSV-2 IgM antibodies were detected in the blood sample and it is likely caused due to an active genital herpes infection
