HPV HR DNA Detection by Real-Time PCR

HPV HR DNA Detection by Real-Time PCR

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection is a viral infection that frequently results in the production of warts on the skin or mucous membranes. There are around 100 HPV genotypes that can cause an impact on an individual, with a few causing warts and a few high-risk genotypes causing cervical cancer. It primarily affects women. Males can contract the disease, but they are more likely to transmit it to their female sexual partners during intercourse.

The HPV HR (HPV high-risk) DNA detection by real-time PCR test involves measuring gene expressions of various strains of HPV, which include 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68, that have been linked to cervical cancer incidence. Among all these, the HPV 16 and 18 genotypes are the most closely linked to the advancement of cervical cancers in women. This test can help identify high-risk genes linked to the development of cervical cancer in women

Interpretation of the Test Results

The HPV HR DNA detection test results are usually given as either positive or negative.

Positive test results – These results show the presence of HPV due to 1 or more genotypes in the samples, indicating an increased risk of getting cervical malignancies sooner. Individuals who get positive test results will require colposcopy.

Negative test results – These indicate the absence of different types of HPV genotypes. Individuals who are at risk of HPV but with negative test results are referred for repeat testing by both cytology and an HR-HPV test within 12 months
